BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A man who held a 5-year-old boy hostage in an underground bunker for nearly a week before dying in a shootout with the FBI received multiple gunshot wounds, a county coroner said today. Dale County Coroner Woodrow Hilboldt said he was allowed into the bunker in the southeastern Alabama community of Midland City on Wednesday evening. The raid of the bunker occurred Monday afternoon.

He pronounced 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes dead at 8:58 p.m. Wednesday.

"He had multiple gunshot wounds," Hilboldt told The Associated Press. The coroner declined to say how many times Dykes had been shot or where the wounds were on his body. He said the body was taken to a state forensics laboratory in Montgomery for an autopsy.

The body was removed from the bunker on Wednesday night, FBI agent Jason Pack said Thursday, hours after the FBI announced that it had found no more explosives on the property besides those that were discovered in a PVC pipe leading into the bunker and inside the bunker itself.

FBI Special Agent Paul Bresson said in an email late Wednesday that the technicians who scoured the 100-acre property in the days after the standoff ended had "completed their work and cleared the crime scene."

"No additional devices were found," he added.

Bresson said evidence-review teams are now sifting through the crime scene, a process that could take two to three more days. A shooting-review team from Washington also is reviewing the hostage-taking episode, which began Jan. 29 and ended Monday when Dykes was killed in a gunfight with the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team.

The team, which is the agency's full-time counterterrorism unit, raided the bunker and rescued the 5-year-old boy, FBI spokesman Jason Pack said. Trained in military tactics and outfitted with combat-style gear and weapons, the group was formed 30 years ago in preparation for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

According to a U.S. official, about a dozen Navy Seabees, who specialize in naval construction, helped authorities build a mock-up of the bunker to plan the FBI assault. The official, who was not authorized to discuss the rescue effort, spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity.

Hilboldt, who got a close look at the bunker Wednesday night, described it as being about 6 feet-by-8 feet with an 8-foot-high plywood ceiling. The ceiling contained a 2-foot-by-2-foot hatch for a door and a ladder extending to the floor from the opening, Hilboldt said. The interior was lined with concrete blocks and the bunker contained only "makeshift" furniture, he said.

"There wasn't much room," Hilboldt said, adding that the officers who stormed the bunker "did good with what they had to work with."

Hilboldt said the FBI already had removed many items from the bunker and conducted an inventory. He wouldn't go into details about what was still there, such as toys that had been delivered to the child or electronic equipment.

Authorities said the standoff began a week ago Tuesday when Dykes boarded a bus full of children and gunned down driver Charles Albert Poland Jr. as Poland sought to protect the 21 children on board. According to officials, the gunman then seized the boy, whom law enforcement authorities have identified only by his first name, Ethan, and fled with his hostage to the nearby bunker, setting up the standoff that captured national attention.

Damn, they sent in Rainbow Six!

Its a shame they weren't able to apprehend him so he could stand trial, but at least you guys don't have to pay for his execution.

Eh...he had about a week to surrender, so its not like they didnt give him a fair chance. Just like the drone thing we were talking about earlier. These American jihadists have had plenty of time to turn themselves in and go through the judicial system.

Suppose the government decided to treat anyone arbitrarily seen as a possible threat to the state? Ruby ridge? Drone strike. Militia units? Drone strikes. Its just as legal according to this DOJ language.

Wait a sec...Ruby Ridge? The govt didnt go after Randy Weaver because they felt he was a threat to the State. They went after Randy Weaver because he was a nutjob member of the Aryan Nations who failed to appear for trial and holed up in Idaho when the US Marshals came to bring him in.

Lets take a look at Ruby Ridge.

That whole mess was begun when Randy Weaver decided that the world was gonna end coz the govt hated them and they decided to move off up in the mountains to try to hunker down and survive the apocalypse that was sure to come. He then had a land dispute with a neighbor and they began filing charges and counter-charges against one another.

The neighbor told the Secret Service that Weaver was a member of the Aryan Nations, and Weaver denied this. Weaver's attorney wound up running his mouth, while the neighbor (Terry Kinneson) began aletter writing campaign and it all wound up dragging the ATF into the whole affair. The ATF andf FBI could have probably cared less about them living up in the mountains until this attorney began making all these charges. Thus they and the FBi began investigating.

And guess what?

The ATF first became aware of Weaver in July 1986 when he was introduced to an ATF informant at a meeting of the Aryan Nations. Gee, what happened? Looks like Weaver was actually a member of a hate group and lied to the govt after all! Then weaver turns around and buys 2 sawed-off shotguns from an FBI informant! Wow! Just a harmless little bit of horse trading though...nevermind its illegal.

Things broke down after that. The FBI informant made some charges against weaver that were false...but here's the thing...Weaver broke the law. Plus he'd been associating with the Aryan Nation and there was plenty...repeat...plenty of reason to suspect this nutjob was gonna be trouble.

Weaver and his wife were arrested, released on bail (which is normal) and were ordered to appear for trial. The probation officer tried to get Weaver to give a phone number so he could contact him, but Weaver was known to have an intense distrust of government . So Weaver didnt give him a number. The date of the trial was changed and because he had no number...he couldnt get in touch with Weaver. (Sounds like some folks I know). He even contacted several people who knew Weaver to get a message to him. The probation officer acted in good faith. Weaver just didnt show up for his trial.

See, Weaver could have explained his side of the story and they probably would have found out that there was a possibility that the the stuff the FBI informant was claiming might have been false. But Weaver didnt bother with that. He just didnt show up. He also left no way to be contacted. He just dropped out of sight! (Remember... he thinks the govt is evil).

By this point the feds are pretty much fed up with this nut, and they wound up passing it on to the ATF. As the law enforcement arm of the federal court, it was the duty of the US Marshals to bring in fugitive Randy Weaver. Then US Marshals recieved reports that Weaver had fired at a helicopter! Later the pilot said that no one had fired at his copter, but what are the US MArshals supposed to do at this point? It looked like Weaver was freaking out and shooting at people now.

Anyway, Weaver had a chance to have his date in court. He had a lawyer who was gonna help him. Given that the FBI informant had possibly lied about some things, he probably could have gotten off. But no. Weaver was yet another nutjob who's distrust of the Feds led to he and his family getting shot to pieces. This is what happened then and is what would happen to anyone today who thinks they need their guns to "keep the govt in line".

Weaver's boy got killed and nothing much has changed. No one is really 100% sure about what happened when his boy was killed but how stupid do you have to be to come running out of the woods armed to the teeth and confront these armed law enforcement officials? What is known is that the boy was running around outside with a .223 Mini-14 rifle during an attempt to bring Weaver in. Weaver's friend Kevin Harris was also there and shot and killed a US Marshal. They came out of the woods and confronted law enforcement, a firefight ensued and the Feds won. Why am I not surprised? Rolling Eyes

And the Ruby Ridge B.S. is so often used to make the Govt look like they are tyrannical.

Weaver too stupid to realize he could have probably made a fortune if he'd simply gone on to trial and then sold his story. Probably would have made a much better impact and he'd have been a hero today to many...even in the govt, rather than becoming a grease spot on the pages of history.

It was only after this firefight and the deaths that the seige began. Only after a US marshal had been shot and killed did they nbring the full brunt of law enforcement down on Weaver's head. Up until then, they had merely been trying to bring Weaver in...coz he missed his court date.

Even at that point the FBI tried to negotiate with Weaver. They tried to talk him in. Weaver had been given every chance in the world prior to all this mess. None of this had to happen.

Thats why when some one tells me that they have to keep all their guns "to keep the govt in line" I think of Ruby Ridge, and how idiotic it is for anyone to think they can stand up to the US govt. If the govt wants you...they'll get you.

I guess John Delorean was also a nutjob....................there is a common thread between the two...............

Frick it, you ain't interested. If you really were, you'd know that most of your post is false.

Instead of hitting all the BS individually, I'll just post what the FBI said during the seige:

On about August 24, 1992, the fourth day of the siege on the Weaver family, FBI Deputy Assistant Director Danny Coulson wrote a memo:

OPR 004477
Something to Consider
1. Charge against Weaver is Bull Shit.
2. No one saw Weaver do any shooting.
3. Vicki has no charges against her.
4. Weaver's defense. He ran down the hill to see what dog was
barking at. Some guys in camys shot his dog.
Started shooting at him. Killed his son. Harris did the
shooting [of Degan]. He [Weaver] is in pretty strong legal position."

You also keep using this one example of why government should take our firearms. You do realize one family is much different from 100+ million??? Even if only 5% take part, that is still one of the largest armies in the world.
