Homophobic 'vigilante' video appears online
BBC News

A video has appeared online showing men shouting homophobic abuse at another man in east London, telling him to "get out of here" as "it is a Muslim area".

Last week, the East London Mosque condemned men shown in another video posted on the internet claiming to be "patrolling" Whitechapel.

Police started an inquiry and two men were later arrested.

In the latest video a man is told: "Get out of here you fag... Don't stay around here any more."

Gay rights group Stonewall said: "This incident is yet another reminder of the homophobic abuse that gay people face all too often."
'Stoke tensions'

In the previous footage posted last week, a group of men announced themselves to passers-by as "vigilantes implementing Islam upon your own necks".

The video shows the men pouring alcoholic drinks down drains.

The East London Mosque responded to the video saying: "Individuals claiming to be self-styled 'Muslim patrols' have been harassing members of the public on the streets of east London late at night, including outside our mosque after it has closed.

"These actions are utterly unacceptable and clearly designed to stoke tensions and sow discord. We wholly condemn them.

"The actions of this tiny minority have no place in our faith nor on our streets."
'You're dirty mate'

In the latest video, a man is approached in Whitechapel and asked: "Don't you know this is a Muslim area? What's wrong with your face?

"Why are you dressed like that for? You're walking through a Muslim area dressed like a fag, mate.

"You need to get out of here quicker. You're dirty mate. Look at your shoes.

"Get out of here you fag... Don't stay around here any more."

Stonewall said: "YouGov polling for Stonewall shows that every year one in eight lesbian and gay people are the victim of crimes or harassment simply because they are gay.

"We urge victims of all homophobic crimes and incidents to report them to the police and for the police to take action to protect gay people from these disturbing crimes."

Scotland Yard responded to the original footage posted saying: "We are aware of incidents over the weekend of 12/13 January where a small group of people had harassed members of the public, and of YouTube videos showing this.

"In response to this incident officers on duty are being briefed as to what has occurred and what to be on the look out for."

A 22-year-old man was arrested in the Acton area of west London on Sunday and a 19-year-old man was arrested after going to an east London police station on Monday.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and public order offences and have been bailed to return to an east London police station in February and March pending further inquiries.

London Police Arrest Two In 'Muslim Patrol' Incidents

Over the past week, London has been hit by a series of incidents in which a group of self-styled vigilantes have accosted Londoners for not adhering to what they say are Islamic standards.

The men posted videos of their "Muslim patrols" on YouTube. In one video posted by BBC World, the men appear take an alcoholic beverage from a pedestrian and pour it out. They tell him that alcohol is not allowed in a "Muslim area."

Later in the video, the men tell a young woman wearing a skirt to cover up.

"We don't respect those who disobey God," they tell her.

The woman tells them she is "appalled."

"This is Great Britain," she says, to which one of the men responds that they are "vigilantes implementing Islam upon your necks."

This week, after another video — this time showing the men accosting another man for being gay — surfaced online, Scotland Yard made two arrests.

The Guardian reports:

"The Metropolitan Police said that two men were arrested in connection with a series of incidents that took place over the course of 12-13 January in east London. Videos of the incidents were later uploaded onto YouTube.

"A 22-year-old man was arrested in Acton on Sunday while a 19-year-old man voluntarily attended an east London police station on Monday.

"A Met spokesperson said: 'The pair were arrested on suspicion of GBH and Public Order offences and have been bailed to return to an east London police station on a dates in February and March pending further enquiries. The Metropolitan Police Service takes these incidents very seriously and is pursuing various lines of enquiry with a view to identifying and prosecuting the individuals concerned."

In the early video, the men say they are standing in front of mosque. According to the East London Mosque, they were in front of their building, but in a statement, they called the patrols "utterly unacceptable and clearly designed to stoke tensions and sow discord."

"We wholly condemn them," the statement went on. "The East London Mosque is committed to building cooperation and harmony between all communities in this borough. The actions of this tiny minority have no place in our faith nor on our streets."

Ethnic and religious tensions have always existed in the U.K. Remember, it was those tensions that fueled the 2011 riots in Birmingham.

In a op-ed in Britain's Independent, Hasnet Lais writes that stunts like these play right into the hands of those who oppose Muslims. He says that incidents like these are rare, but they make the fear of a Sharia state stoked by extremists seem real to regular Britons.

"In my experience, far from advocating Sharia squads, most ordinary mosque-goers would be sickened at the sight of co-religionists pontificating about morals to non-Muslims," he writes.

That's turks in Austria not Muslims in Austria, slight difference :-P They're not giving out so much because of the religion thing but because the Hagia Sophia is a symbol of istanbul and Turkey as a whole.

Sharia Law anyone? Isnt this what the Taliban were doing in Afghanistan? And its my understanding that some Muslims want to bring their Sharia law to the US.

Britain needs to crush this Sharia movement out quick before it becomes a problem they may not be able to handle.

Best part is that the Hagia Sophia isn't Turkish or Muslim architecture, but rather Roman and Christian!

And on the other side of the coin:

Family quits Bingham after anti-Muslim attacks

A Muslim family say they have been forced to move from their home after offensive graffiti and a cross wrapped in ham were left outside their house.

Murad Alam, 39, said his wife and two sons, aged eight and 10, had moved out of their home in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, to a "safe" place.

Mr Alam said he had found his son plotting escape routes on his computer after the "horrific" attacks last year.

"My wife and children also had names called at them in the street," he said.

"The first incident was when the big, wooden cross, wrapped in ham, fell into the house after a knock at the door," said Mr Alam.

He said they had names such as "Paki" and "tramp" shouted at them in the street.

"The kids have been abused a number of times; the eldest had smoke blown in his face by an elderly local gentleman."

'Explaining racism'
Offensive graffiti was also painted on the path outside the family home.

"It really annoys me that they should use a cross and try and turn this into a religious argument," said Mr Alam.

"My family were terrified from the very first incident; my wife had never experienced racism, neither had my kids.

"In fact I had to explain to my children what racism even was, because they're so young they didn't understand the concept that someone could dislike you because of your skin colour or religion."

The family has now moved to West Bridgford where they say they feel safe.

Mr Alam said Bingham was generally a nice area with a good reputation and it was a shame it had been tarred by their experiences.

"The week before we moved there, Bingham was named the eighth best place to live in the UK - but that's if you're white - there are not many Asian or black faces there,

"It is a nice, generally middle-class village and I'm sure most of the people there are great, it's just these choice few."

'Secret cameras'
Nottinghamshire Police said a 13-year-old boy had been arrested in connection with the attacks but he was later released without charge.

Mr Alam said he had nothing but gratitude for the police involved in his family's case.

"Nottinghamshire Police fitted secret cameras, security lighting and after the graffiti, they were literally parked at the end of the alley for days, 24/7.

"It's just a shame that no-one has come forward to name the people who are behind it," he said.

Fiyaz Mughal, director of Tell Mama, a national service that records and analyses anti-Muslim attacks, said: "This is one of a number of cases that we have seen where the anti-Muslim prejudice has had a shocking impact on the wider family as a whole.

"We provided practical support to the family where we could. They are though, moving away and fear that the perpetrators and the air of anti-Muslim prejudice in the area was just too much which is very, very sad."

Not trying to claim equivalency here, but both sides are pretty much feeding each other at this stage.

And is being anti-islam the same as anti-muslim? Why should we be tolerant of intolerance?

Racist, sexists, widely religiously intolerant, violent, aggressive, expansionist, fanatical, that IS the doctrine laid out by the "great prophet" muhammed, and is fundamentally a message i reject morally. Islam and western values will never ultimately co-mingle. They are incompatible. Either things will perpetually be as they are now between islam and the west, or one will have to ultimately win out.
