Obamas guilt game
President Obama moved Thursday to put the muscle of the White House and his network of supporters behind a gun control package tracking toward the Senate floor, calling on voters to pressure Congress into backing it as the proposal runs into resistance on Capitol Hill.
The president, in a set of brief remarks from the White House Thursday surrounded by the mothers of shooting victims, raised concern that the shock from the Newtown elementary school shooting could soon fade.
"Less than 100 days ago that happened. ... Shame on us if we've forgotten," Obama said. "I haven't forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we've forgotten."
Amid signals from Washington that the Senate bill could be losing momentum and high-dollar ad campaigns on both sides, the president was there to deliver a message to wavering lawmakers. "Don't get squishy," he said.
Obama, accusing opponents of drumming up "fear," urged supporters to call members of Congress and pressure them into backing the package.
Republican Sen. Mike Lee, of Utah, ripped the president for the remarks, suggesting he was exploiting the Newtown tragedy.
"The proposals the president is calling for Congress to pass would primarily serve to reduce the constitutionally protected rights of law-abiding citizens while having little or no effect on violent crime," Lee said in a statement. "It is deeply unfortunate that he continues to use the tragedy at Newtown as a backdrop for pushing legislation that would have done nothing to prevent that horrible crime."
Lee said he and his conservative colleagues plan to ensure that any of the firearms proposals require a 60-vote threshold in order to proceed. This could be a high hurdle for the Senate to clear.
Already, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid dropped from the main package a proposal to renew and expand the expired assault weapons ban.

And thus we see who is really the driving force behind this.

I've said many times that the problem isnt necessarily the gun, but rather the violent disrespectful culture we have in America. But no one wants to deal with this beause it requires people to act with respect and be responsible parents. The massacre at Newtown brought this latest gun debate to the forefront. But unfortunatly people on both sides got hung up on talking about assault weapons...leading NRA supporters to ask...just what is an assault weapon. Most gun ban advocates wound up with a confused look on their face and rather than do a little homework, usually tried to change the topic.
Imo, if the govt would limit their zeal to ban guns to Title II / NFA firearms, they'd be better off. Of course there are still gonna be some gun nuts (not every gun owner is a nut btw) that will argue that the 2nd amendment protects them from any and all situations regarding gun possession and ownership and that they can do as they like.
Of course they are wrong. There have been many cases where the Supreme court has ruled otherwise. For example:
On March 26, 2010 the court ruled that states can require individuals to register their firearms, as well as prohibit large capacity magazines.
On August 31, 2009 the court stated that the 2nd amendment does NOT protect juveniles and that they may not own firearms.
On June 30, 2008 the court ruled that weapons may not be taken into certain areas such as post offices, nor can you have them in private4 vehicles in the parking lot of govt facilities.
Also a felon may not own or possess firearms.
Thus we see that the govt can legally regulate firearms despite what some may say.

Good question. And glad to see I'm not the only one here (anymore) who places a lot of blame on Hollywood. I think the entertainment media influences people a lot more than they are willing to admit.
I posted a couple of articles earlier where a few hollywood starts admitted that tv and films did have an affect on the gun culture here in the USA. (Yet those same people had made violent films themselves).

Key word in the whole debate;
control
That is all one needs to know about the mindset of its supporters.

No it is not. People wish to control the outcome of the uncontrollable. They think that government restrictions will be that control. It will not. It never will be. All it is, is a punishment on the innocent, through the control of that in which we do not like, because we are scared that "something might happen". Unless I am mistaken, there is no pre-crime division yet.
