I wonder why they cut off Atlantic spreading but kept the Pacific spreading ridge going? I guess that the Atlantic has opened and closed multiple times before, perhaps that was their rational?

Is that maybe because of the direction the tectonic plates are travelling? I thought it was the other way around tho, that the Atlantic was widening and the Pacific was shrinking....

The Atlantic basin is currently growing, with extension being accommodated along the mid-Atlantic Ridge. At some point subduction could initiate against either Eurasia or the east coast of North America and close that basin back up. Either that or Africa is ganna go nuts and bulldoze North America and Eurasia.
