Where I'm at now didn't have a very good winter, but managed better than most of the West. The valley just to the south of here only received 30% of normal precipitation last winter. For much of the West this is the second consecutive drought year.

Isnt all this in line with a la nina summer though? West usually gets drought and wildfires, then the east usually gets droughts and wildfires during el nino...or the other way around, i cant remember

No, this is two years in a row (la nina would be one) and this is far worse than those cycles would usually result in. La Nina also usually resulted in a bit more of a high elevation snow pack in the Sierra Nevada, last winter we hardly had one at all...

The Texas hill country has been in drought for the past several years. It is getting bad around there.

I think these things run in cycles. Seems like we had drought here a few years ago. Now its raining several days a week.
