Gettysburg
150 years ago, the Battle of Gettysburg was fought.
Southerners fought the War Between the States for States rights - they did not want the North telling them what to do.
I have read that Gettysburgburg was a turning point - not only because the North won - but because the CSA invaded the North.
Thoughts?

Re: Gettysburg
I really don't think going to town for supplies is an invasion.
I really don't think there was a turning point. The CSA never really stood a chance, especially since the bulk of migrants came into the country via NYC and were pretty much forced to fight right off the boat.
Even though all states mentioned slavery in their letters of secession, they also mentioned things like tariffs and unfair trade. The seeds of revolt were sewn in 1826 with the Tariff of Abominations.

Re: Gettysburg
Gettysburg hurt the South, to be sure.
I think the biggest turning point(s) were the blockade and the North's destroying our supply lines. Also Sherman's march to the sea. Man, that drove a bayonet into the Heart of Dixie.
Glad things are different now and we can be friends.

The south never had a chance logistically in fighting a symmetrical war

Re: Gettysburg
Sure didn't. There was a lot of Southern Pride and boasting (and probably drinking) done during the time we decided to secede. But the North's manufacturing base was so much stronger than our Agricultural based economy. We had to import a lot of stuff and didn't really have that powerful of a navy.

Despite all the bravado and rhetoric, the South never really aimed to fight a "traditional" symmetrical war, as in, one where the outcome is "beat your enemy on the field of battle, occupy his territory, and dictate your terms". After the initial battles, when both sides realized that the other was actually serious about fighting, the South's strategy pretty much consisted of hanging on long enough and bloodying the North enough to turn public opinion against the war so much that the Northern politicians would have no option other than to accept the status quo. And it nearly worked, as the battle of Gettysburg was being fought, they were having the Draft Riots in New York. If Gettysburg had gone the other way, it might just have been enough to put Lincoln under enough poltical pressure to accept terms.

Re: Gettysburg
Very likely! Also the South lobbied hard to get European powers to intervene. I think they hoped England would bust the blockade and start shipping arms and munitions.
Gee...maybe they shoulda thunk this out before going to war?
