I wish we could do something like this in the US, however any such proposal would be met with cries to 'communism' and 'tyranny.' Hell, California can even build a bloody train track without certain aspects of society raising hell...

We do do things like that. Lafayette has River Ranch. Been built now for about 15 years.

The ironic thing about this is that setting up all of this ecologically friendly, self-sustaining green energy stuff costs a butt-load of money, and over there, the money is pretty much all coming from oil...
My cousin is an environmental engineer over in Dubai and he's done work on Masdar, All of the pictures look very futuristic and shiny and stuff, but there isn't very much that is actually built & finished off yet.
