Secede from the Union? Bad idea in in the 1860s and a worse idea now. For one, the border issue would be dumped in our laps. Our economy would plummet because, aside from a few cities with high tech industries, we are still largely agricultural. That means lower paying jobs with workers eeking out and existance. Southern States are all in debt and absolutely rely on Federal assistance for to get by. Unemployment would likely be rampant (as if it isnt already), but there would be no money for the so-called safety net for the destitute.

I dunno....I never thought it was a good idea.

You really fail to grasp the current economic situation of tUSA.

Things that have changed:

The south now holds roughly 1/3 of tUSA's population.
Roughly 65% of the nation's military calls Dixie home.
The south holds over 70% of the nations oil & gas as well as most of the refining capabilities.
The south now leads the north in manufacturing jobs (by a lage margin).
The south leads the rest of the nation in job creation (by a fair margin).


Yes, the south recieves more in federal aid than the rest of the nation. This is no secret. It isn't a secret as to why. It just isn't considered a viable reason by those who refuse to admit that federal assistance leads to complacency. To adress the problem is to admit that we have one and considering the population makeup of those that recieve the dole in the south, well the race card would also be played. This is not to say that the problem is caused by blacks. Just a quick lesson in welfare history tells you that blacks were omitted from welfare up until the 1960's (at that time whites made up over 90% of the welfare rosters). What happened in the 60's changed that so that we now see an affirmative action type of system where welfare distribution is concerned (it is now easier to get federal funds if the person is a minority rahter than white). Since 70% of the nation's black population lives in the south, then it would be rather safe to say that 70% of black welfare recipients also live in the south. You add in the existing white welfare roster (as well as Hispanic which we have in roughly equal amounts as the rest of the nation) and you get an inordinate sampling of welfare recipients. Please note that this is not race based per sae, even though race does play a role in figuring out why (a quick glance at the charts show that the amount of aid to blacks, whites, and hispanics recieving welfare is about even).
