Because there is no other possible explanation. Why no pictures of the 'UFO' from the dive? Why no samples of the material?

My best guess from the figures presented (admittedly, I only looked at the pictures) is that there is a rock outcrop protruding (the 'UFO') out of the sea bed disturbing the bed load sediment transport and creating a 'shadow' down current (the 'runway'). Considering the setting the 'fire pits' could be explained by several processes, including ice rafting.
