    • Franciscan School looted and classrooms burned to the ground

    • Nuns subjected to abuse as they were paraded through the streets

    • Two Christians killed since government moved against protesters

    • Dozens of churches, homes and businesses owned by Christians attacked

A mob marched nuns through the battle-torn streets of Cairo ‘like prisoners of war’ in the latest outrage against Egypt’s Christian minority.

Sister Manal, principal of a Franciscan school in suburban Cairo, watched for six hours as a mob looted the building, knocked the cross off the gate and replaced it with a black banner resembling the flag of Al Qaeda. The classrooms were then burned to the ground and the women taken away, attracting a crowd of abusive onlookers.

An Egyptian army officer raises his gun at the crowd outside a mosque in Cairo. Elsewhere nuns were paraded like 'prisoners of war' after Franciscan School attacked by Islamists

Police told Sister Manal that the nuns had been targeted by hardline Islamists, convinced that they had given Muslim children an inappropriate education.
‘We are nuns. We rely on God and the angels to protect us,’ she said. ‘At the end, they paraded us like prisoners of war and hurled abuse at us as they led us from one alley to another without telling us where they were taking us.’
Siblings Wardah and Bedour, two Christian women employed by the school, also found themselves having to fight their way through the mob while being groped, hit and insulted by the extremists.
So far two Christians have been killed since the military-backed government moved against protesters calling for former president Mohamed Morsi’s reinstatement.

And dozens of churches, homes and businesses owned by Christians have been attacked and razed to the ground.

Christian persecution?  Naaaah...not in 2013!  Impossible!  Rolling Eyes

Incidentally the Coptic Christians in Egypt are among the worlds oldest Christian communities, established by the Apostle Mark.

The Copts have long suffered as scapegoats of any of Egypts problems. Interesting thing, this article said the victims of this specific attack were Franciscans, who are Catholic. Not used to hearing about Catholics being attacked in Egypt.

As I understand it, if you are Christian regardless of sect, and are in Egypt right now, you are a dead man walking.

There were far more attacks and killings shortly after the MB came to power than now. At least it seems the military is trying to keep order. Pure and simple, muslims are intolerant.

Yup, pretty much. Is it because they're Muslim though, or because they're Arab? Are Arab Muslims intolerant and prone to violence at the drop of a hat because of Islam, or because of the Arab culture and mindset? Did Islam make them all hypersensitive violent nutters or would they be hypersensitive violent nutters if they followed any other religion? The 3 biggest muslim countries in the world by population are (in order) Indonesia, Pakistan and India; you never hear a peep out of Indonesia, not much out of India besides a few high-profile attacks, and Pakistan's issues seem to be as much separatist groups who'd be causing trouble anyway, and externally-influenced groups. And most of the violence in Syria is sectarian rather than religious (you definitely can't accuse Assad of being religious).

So, are the Egyptians doing all of this because they're Muslim, pure and simple, or because they're Arabs who happen to be Muslim and Islam is the excuse?

I know i made a generalization, but generally i stand by it. Islam leaves little room for other religions or ideologies. Just read the koran. And just look at the wave of islamism spreading through the mideast. Just look at all the religious laws in the mideast. Would tou want to move there as a non muslim, or do you feel that regardless of what country you wound up in, your rights would be restricted. Most of all i blame ignorance and poverty, but one cant ignore the true nature of islam's ideology, which advocates a global caliphate

And dont give me the crap about indonesia (which has its own islamist problems). You know as food as i do that im referring to the arab world. As for your question about whether they would be the same under another religion, im not sure how much we can parse mideast culture, from islamic culture. Regardless, its my estimation that most of the "moderates" who can get out of the mideast, have. Islam is no less tolerantthan that pastor in uganda. Anything other than islam is a threat to islam, and non muslims are second class citizens. At least according to the koran. So you may have different groups that go to different extremes, but they still follow a hateful and intolerent ideology. Really its just a religious form of fascism

Never hear of violence stemming from other Muslims???

Plenty of violence there if you look for it. Maybe we don't hear about it because it is not as strategically important.

Maybe it is the Arabs, but that is a racist statement. Maybe it is the religion, but that is.....anti-religious. Neither statement is politically correct. Whatever the case may be, we can easily look at acts of terror. Over 95% of the world's terrorists share something in common. What is that thing they share??? Easy enough question.

No, IMO it isn't because they are Arab.  Its not a racial thing.  The Copts are Arab.  Its because of what Islam teaches.  Arab culture in and of itself is pretty interesting (great food!).  Not crazy about the music though.

The ferocity of widespread violence we are seeing now Muslim nations has happened before, but is something we haven't seen in many years.  Also there has been religious violence between Muslims and Hindu in India. Check out the 1998 Chamba Massacre, the 2002 Fidayeen attacks, the 2002 Ashkardham Temple attack and the 2006 Varanasi bombings.  Also check out the Marad MAssacre and the Godhra train burning.  And in 2010 the Denganga riots resulted in hundreds of Hindu  business establishments and residences were looted, destroyed and burnt, dozens of Hindus were severely injured and several Hindu temples desecrated and vandalized by the Islamist mobs.  Three years later, during the 2013 Canning riots, several hundred Hindu businesses were targeted and destroyed by Islamist mobs.

And man that's just in India.

Do we even need to get into Pakistan?  In 2011 religious intolerance was reported to be at its height, hundreds of minorities, women, journalists and liberals were being killed by Islamist extremists.  The government there does nothing, or maybe tries to cover it all up.

And according to a recent report by Human Rights Watch, violent incidents of persecution against Indonesia's religious minorities, including Christians, has been on the rise since 2012.  On August 7th, Catholic schools in Jakarta were hit by firebombs.
